1. First Impression: Pure Chaos

The moment I walked out of Dongmyoap Station (Line 1 & 6) Exit 3, I was stunned.

• Polished displays? None.

• English signs? None.

• Instagram-style aesthetic? None.

Just piles of jackets, military coats, sneakers, and old electronics. And grandpas picking through everything like professional stylists. This is not a touristy market; this is real Korean local life.

Right across Exit 6, I noticed a very old Dongdaemun apartment building.
Its faded concrete and weathered balconies gave the area a real lived-in feel — like the city itself had aged alongside the market.
It’s one of those small details that makes wandering around Dongmyo so authentic.

400-Year-Old Story Behind Dongmyo

What makes this place even more fascinating is its history.

Right next to the market stands 동묘, built in 1601 during the Joseon Dynasty.

It was dedicated to 관우(關羽), a legendary general from the Three Kingdoms period, admired for his loyalty and honor.

Yes — a 400-year-old shrine sits right next to piles of second-hand clothes.

After the Korean War, second-hand trading naturally formed around this area.
Over time, it became a low-cost market mainly visited by elderly Koreans.

But in the late 2010s, young Koreans rediscovered it.

Oversized coats. Retro fashion. 90s aesthetics.

Now, Dongmyo brings together:

  • Vintage lovers

  • Foreign travelers

What makes this place fascinating is the history tucked away inside the noise.
Right next to the clothes piles stands Dongmyo Shrine (동묘), built in 1601. It was dedicated to Guan Yu, the legendary Chinese general.
Imagine a 400-year-old sanctuary of loyalty and honor sitting right next to 2,000-won vintage jeans. After the Korean War, this area became a hub for second-hand trading. Today, it’s where 90s retro lovers and elderly locals meet in one unique, chaotic space.
4. Essential Tips for Your Visit
• Bring Cash: Most vendors don't accept cards.
• No Fitting Rooms: Wear something light so you can try jackets on over your clothes.
• Weekdays over Weekends: Weekends are legendary but crowded. Late morning on a weekday is the sweet spot.
• Check the Weather: If it rains, many outdoor piles disappear!
5. Is Dongmyo Worth It?
• If you want luxury brands or organized malls → Skip it.
• If you want the real, raw, uncurated Seoul → Go now.
